Subject: Industrial Hygiene Survey - Oil MiBt and Asbestos Fiber - August, 1980
At the request of M. Lindsey, Senior Safety Engineer, an industrial hygiene survey was performed at the subject location. The purpose was to evaluate employe ex posures to:
1) Oil mist and smoke at the lathes in Department No. 271 and bores
in Department Nos. 274, 2^4 and 269.
2) Asbestos fibers during the loading of rear bands onto conveyor
No. 6 in Department No. 290.
These surveys were prompted by union grievances relating to health and safety.
Survey results, shown in the attached tables, are summarized below:
I. Oil Mist and Smoke
Department No. 271 -- Breathing zone air samples of representative lathe operators indioate that employe exposures are well below ap propriate permissible exposure limits (PEL's). During the survey, an attempt was made to similate the worst possible operating condi tions by eliminating the mechanical dilution ventilation in the area. Despite this condition, air sampling results were still in compliance.
Department Nob. 274, 25k and 265 - Breathing zone air samples on
representative bore operators indicate that employe exposures are well below appropriate PEL's for oil mist and smoke. Despite thiB fact, it was noted that the existing exhaust ventilation on bore No. 137843 waB not operating adequately. The enclosure and ducting appeared to be clogged with oil and debris. This condition should be corrected.

II. Asbestos Fibers
Breathing zone air samples of the employe who loads rear bands on conveyor No. 6 indicate no excessive exposure to airborne asbestos. In addition, employe exposures were below the Ford medioal monitoring limit of 0.1 f/oc. The asbestos containing part of the band was oiled which further reduoed the possibility of airborne emissions.
Based on the above information, it is concluded that no health hazard exists. However, if conditions change appreciably (i.e., dusty parts or containers), the operation should be resurveyed.
