November 13, 1975 FIRESTONE TIRE AND RUBBER COMPANY POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, PLANT We have received a preliminary and incomplete report from industry sources on a study which has been conducted among workers at Fire stone's Pottstown, Pennsylvania, plant. This survey was conducted jointly by the University of North Carolina, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Center for Disease Control. Firestone's Pottstown facility produces a broad range of rubber and plastic materials, including PVC. Incomplete and fragmentary data have indicated that wives of workers in vinyl chloride polymerization areas had a higher rate of fetal deaths (miscarriages and stillbirths) than a control group made up vivcc cif iriiiiscjr smci p2.2st.ics i.o2.i.on We are unable to comment until 1) we have received more complete and conclusive information and 2) our medical staff and environmental specialists have had time to review and interpret the data.
