Solids from the Village of Sauget's primary wastewater treatment plant. The solids were pumped to the lagoons to dry. The lagoons were in use from the mid 1960s until 1980 when they were closed and capped by approximately two feet of clay. Flows to the treatment plant were from all companies in the Village of Sauget. 2Q. How large is Site 0? Who owns the site? 2A. The Village of Sauget owns the site. It is approximately 20 acres. 3Q. What is Monsanto's view of the possibility of the Sauget Sites becoming a federal Superfund Site? 3A. You'd have to ask the Illinois EPA about that possibility. However, Monsanto plans to work closely with whichever agency is involved in the Sauget Sites -- the U.S. EPA or the Illinois EPA. 4Q. What's Monsanto's overall policy on the Sauget Sites? 4A. We are moving in a responsible manner to resolve long-standing environmental issues in the area. 5Q. Is Monsanto's waste in Site 0? 5A. Monsanto's wastewater flowed through the Village of Sauget's sewer system to the Physical Chemical primary treatment facility, as did all Sauget industries. The waste would contain residue from the manufacturing process during the mid 60s until 1979 when the lagoons were closed. 6Q. What health risks are posed by these chemicals? Are they dangerous? 6A. There is no immediate threat to human health or the environment. The lagoons were covered with a clay cap approximately two feet thick in 1980. The site is not accessible to the public. Along with other industry in the area we will work with the Illinois EPA system to determine the appropriate course of action. 8Q. What about the former Krummrich landfill? Have you completed your study? 8A. We submitted the draft remedial investigation report in February 1993. The Illinois EPA had additional questions. Phase I of the draft report was finalized and will initiate Phase II which will address the Illinois EPA's questions and fully characterize the site. 9Q. Is Monsanto involved in any other sites? 9A. Our Krummrich plant has been in operation for more than 70 years. At an undetermined number of sites, Monsanto may be one of several responsible parties. We will be working with the Illinois EPA and other parties in coming up with plans to investigate and remediate the sites, as appropriate. 10Q. Is Monsanto's waste involved in Site Q.? 10A. We believe Monsanto hazardous wastes were located in Site R and perhaps immediately East of the former Krummrich landfill. Accordingly, we included this area in our RI/FS work plan.
