Dear Dr. Kehoe, On the 14-th of this month, I am leaving London to pay a visit to the Philippines and Australia, with a view to discussing with the Shell and Caltex Refineries in the Philippines the problems and safety aspects of lead alkyl compounds with the management and the doctor at these two refineries. The Caltex Refinery has recently had a case of an alkyl lead blender who has made a successful claim against them in respect of a varicose dermatitis that he developed some two or three years ago, which he claimed was caused by coming into contact with tetraethyl lead during the course of his work as a blending operator. His claim was supported by a local physician and a Court of Law in Manila has found in his favour. As I understand it, Caltex have taken the case to Appeal, but we have not heard with what result. The Shell Refinery have had suspicion thrown upon them following some alleged cases of lead poisoning in Manila, which it was suggested, may have arisen as a result of their T.E.L. effluent finding its way into the town's drainage system. Subsequently, it has been learned that these children were using leaded crayon pencils at their school. There has also been a complaint among blenders at the Shell Refinery that they can smell tetramethyl lead coming through their masks after about 20 hours use. In view of these reports, and the apparent lack of correct information in this area, I have been asked to visit these two refineries with a view to providing them with a more balanced picture in terms of alkyl lead compounds. I am proposing to spend a week in Manila from 15th January to 22na, and then I am taking the opportunity to visit .Australia with a view to meeting Dr. Fairley and others of our doctors there, and possibly tie in a visit to New Zealand. I am intending to spend two weeks in Australia, and then proceed to Los Angeles to attend the Seventh Annual .Air Pollution Medical Research Conference on February 10th and 11th. On February 12th I am proposing to travel to Cincinnati with the hope that I might have an opportunity of meeting you at the Laboratory on the 13th. I have a flight arranged that will take me from Los Angeles to Cincinnati on the 12th February, Flight No. AA.88, which arrives Cincinnati 1800 hours. I have asked Mr. Errol Gay to arrange hotel accommodation for me in Cincinnati, and he will be advising me of this when I reach Los Angeles. I am planning to leave /Cont1d . . 2- Cincinnati 1.4th February for New York, and will be travelling back to the U.K, from New York on the 15th.
