Papageorge B2SK A draft of the paper "Characterization of Polychlorinated Biphenyls" for presentation at the November 19-21 PCB symposium in Chicago Is attached for your review. During the preparation of this manuscript several likely questions of a sensitive nature from the audience occured to me. I am listing these questions and proposed answers for review prior to the symposium. 1. Do Aroclor products contain chlorinated dibenzofurans? Answer: Various researchers have reported finding chlorinated dibenzofurans In PCB products. We have duplicated these procedures and have found chlorinated dibenzofurans in PCBs from Europe, but have not confirmed their presence in Aroclor. 2. What impurities are in Aroclor? Answer: We have isolated low ppm quantities of chloronaphthalenes from Aroclor. 3. What Impurities are in biphenyl used to manufacture Aroclor. Answer: Monsanto biphenyl is 99.97* pure, a remarkable purity for an organic chemical. It contains ppm levels of methyl biphenyl, naphthalene and methyl naphthalene. 4. Does this biphenyl contain dlbenzofuran? Answer: A GC method capable of detecting 0.5 ppm dlbenzofuran in biphenyl showed none detectable. 5. What Aroclors are (Manufactured outside the U.S.?
