L O S C H IAVO TRENDS IN BLOOD C-8 LEVELS FOR VARIOUS T E FL ON EMPLOYEE GROUPS SUMMARY Comparison of data for sample results obtained up to October, 1981 with corresponding data up to June, 1982 shows; For 40 FEP Operators, blood C-8 levels decreased an average 23%. For 85 Fine Powder and Granular Operators, blood C-8 levels decreased an average 18%. New TEFLON employees are accumulating C-8 at a lower rate than in previ ous years. Fine Powder Zone 6 Operators still have the highest blood C-8 levels. Blood C-8 levels in females transferred out of T E FL ON are continuing to decrease. 0835W-1 000199 EID079049 RJZ009070 2 DISCUSSION The attached Tables contain C-8 in blood data for various employee groups in the TE FL ON Divisions. Blood C-8 data were obtained from the FLAIR program. The FLAIR program has proven itself as a valuable tool in aiding in the analysis of blood C-8 data. All blood samples were analyzed by the C-8 specific method. Data recorded in FLAIR by 6/24/82 are used in this summary. Comparisons are made between the data recorded in FLAIR up to October, 1981 with corresponding data up to June, 1982. The following observations are made: FP Operators are ex pe ri en ci ng an overall drop in blood C-B levels of 23%. The decrease for those Operators with over 700 days of service is statistically significant at the 0.05 level using the paired t-test. Fine Powder Operators are ex pe ri en ci ng an overall drop in blood C-8 levels of 12%. Granular Operators are experiencing a drop of 22%. The decreases for Operators with over 700 days of service is not yet statistically significant. Blood C-8 levels in new T E F L O N employees (those with less than 700 days of service) are increasing. However, their levels are increasing at a slower rate than they were in previous years. The average rate of increase for TEFLON Fine Powder Zone 4 Operators using data collected up to October, 1981 was 0.0019 ppm/day. Using only 1982 data, the average rate of increase has dropped to 0.0004 ppm/day. Fine Powder Zone 6 Operators continue to have the highest blood C-8 levels. They average 8 ppm and range as high as 26 ppm. TEFLON Zone 6 Operators have higher blood C-8 levels than T E F L O N Zone 4 Operators. This is because C-8 accumulates in the body over time. Zone 6 Operators have worked in TE FLON much longer than Zone 4 Operators. Operators from four other Divisions at Washington Works have very low but measurable quantities of C-8 in their blood. Blood C-8 levels in females tr ansferred out of TE F L O N dropped an average 19% over an average 161-day period. This includes only females with 0.1 ppm or more C-8 in their blood. The rate of C-8 elimination in females with less than 0.1 ppm is very slow. It is essentially zero for this group. RJZ009071 0835W-2 000200 EID079050 3 CONCLUSION The diligent efforts on the part of T E F L O N Production and Technical to reduce C-8 air levels are paying off. Significant decreases in employee blood C-8 levels are now being seen. Efforts must be continued in the TE FL ON Divisions to control C-8. Both air and blood sampling programs should continue at their present rates. It is important to prevent overconfidence which could lead to overlooking items and thus minimizing effectiveness of current programs.
