BRAKE DRUM WEAR LIMITS (All Models)
PURPOSE To advise field of maximum brake drum wear limits.
INFORMATION Maximum allowable wear limits have been estab lished for all size brake drums to aid inspections and provide pro tection in field against over-boring of used drums. These limits are based on nominal drum diameter plus an allowable wear factor. A wear factor of 0.090 inch is assigned to drums up to and including 14 inches and 0.120 inch to drums over 14 inches. To determine the actual maximum allowable wear diameter for brake drums up to and including 14 inches, add 0.090 inch (wear factor) to nominal diameter, brake drums over 14 inches add 0.120 inch (wear factor) to nominal brake drum diameter. Present production brake drums have the maximum wear diameter plainly and permanently marked on outside face.
RECOMMENDATION Inform and advise personnel of established allowable brake drum limitations. Replace drums if wear limit is exceeded.
