Boudreau Ethyl Corporation 100 Park Avenue New York, New York (10017) Dear Jim: I am giving a talk (and manuscript for publication) at the annual meeting of the Industrial Hygiene Foundation in October 23rd, on a subject which Dr. deTreville gave me by special request. It is not an easy subject for me to take in such a meeting for certain personal reasons, and I find that I have said what seems appropriate for me to say for publication in a previous talk (and manuscript). Accordingly, I have decided to make a few minor alterations in this paper, and to use it for the record, since it has not been published in a regular journal, but in the Proceedings of the XIII International Congress, which has a limited (and temporary) distribution. In raising the question of what I should do about clearing the way for this talk (and publication) I spoke to Mr. Perdue, who advised me to clear it with you, and also to obtain such assistance as you might wish to give me. I am sending a reprint of this publication to you therefore (with a copy of this V letter and an extra copy of the reprint to Mr. Perdue) with the request that you give me, as promptly as possible, any criticisms or suggestions which seem pertinent. You will realize that this paper was not cleared with anyone at t h e ^ ^ time it was given, since it had nothing in it which required clearance.( More over, if I had asked for clearance from Ethyl Corporation I should have had to go also to duPont, and since the paper was written at the last minute there was no time to do this. The present situation is a bit different, because of the site and nature of this meeting, but it is still true that I have made no dubious or controversial statement, and have said only that which I am better prepared to say than is anyone else. Nevertheless, I would value your opinion and comment, and if you have some suggestion to make to the advantage of Ethyl Corporation, I shall accept it gladly. I expect to use this paper (with insignificant modifications) as the printed manuscript, and to make a few introductory and supplemental comments for the benefit of the specific audience, and to avoid the "stuffiness" associated with reading only what has been prepared for publication. I shall, of course, avoid any statement that might cause reverberations of either a professional or public nature. I shall have to get the manuscript to Bob deTreville by this time next week.
