Outline of Discussions.
In all the countries visited it was made clear to the Health Authorities present at each meeting that the purpose of our visits was to provide them with as much information as was available at the present time relating to the hygienic aspects of a new anti-knock compound, Tetramethyl Lead, with particular relation to its use in gasoline.
It. was pointed out that gasoline containing tetramethyl lead v.-as in use at present in limited areas of the U.S.A. and that it was considered likely that at some future date it would appear in gasolines outside of the U.S.A. It was not to be inferred that tetramethyl lead would replacq tetraethyl lead but rather that either or both would be used for addition to motor gasoline as might prove economic.
It was indicated that the information available at present
was preliminary in nature, but was considered to be sufficient to
provide a conclusion as regards the overall toxicological
'
problem, and as such, it was thought desirable that it should be
made available to the appropriate health authorities at this time.
Reference was made to the field trial conducted during the summer of 1959 in California, details of which are contained in b report by Dr. Kehoe dated November 1959, and during that part of the tour in which Dr. Kehoe took part he enlarged in some

measure upon this work; in addition, the problems presented by the higher volatility of tetramethyl were discussed and it was explained, that to some extent, this was offset by the lower toxicity of T.M.L. vi$-a-vis T.E.L.
In conclusion it was indicated that the overall hazard presented by T.M.L. did not appear to differ materially from that presented by T.E.L., and the precautionary measures recommended for the handling of T.E.L were well suited for application to T.M.L., provided that these are properly understood and followed.
In some cases the Health Authorities enquired whether and by whom they would be informed about the introduction of gasoline containing T.M.L. into their country: In reply it was stated that Associated could not undertake to do this and in any event, it might not necessarily be in possession of the information.
No adverse reaction was experienced among the Health Authorities in any of the countries visited, and all were appreciative of the information with which they had been supplied.
In the case of both Switzerland and Prance a further approach is to be made to the Authorities in the immediate future to ascertain what, if any, procedurial steps are required.
