Steinhoff, Granville Central Flies Per our telephone conversation of September 21,1 am sending for your review and approval for 'outside the company5 distribution of William D. Robertson's Summer Employment Report 1967. Bill plans to submit his report to Dr. J. O. Everhart, Department of Ceramic Engineering, The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio for college credit I was asked yesterday to read this report, remove any information proprietary to OCF and then approve in writing the report so it could be submitted to OSU. I read the report and removed those sections, which I considered extremely proprietary, such as a discussion of cancer and asbestos fibers and our search for a glass fiber to replace asbestos. I did not, however, approve the report, since a lab manager does not have the authority to approve anything to be distributed outside the company. I discussed the problem with Bill Steinhoff and called to his attention the recent directive, which states all , batch formulations and other proprietary data going outside Granville had to be cleared through Mr. Thomas' office first It was agreed, since both Messrs. Thomas and McEvoy were out of their offices, we should discuss the distribution of summer reports outside the company with you. It is very difficult to decide what is and what is not proprietary. Robertson's report does not now contain -- any proprietary information, such as batch formulations, composition of additives, etc. However, it does tell in very general terms what problems we worked on, how the problems were solved and current status. How valuable is such general information? A report similar to Bill's from a summer student working in the high temperature products lab at Johns-Manville would be worth its weight in gold. It wouldn't tell me how they solved their problems, but it would tell me what they were working on and current status. I would love to get my hands on such a report Bill Robertson returned to school on September 20. His address is 234 East Seventeenth Avenue, Columbus, Ohio. He is expecting to obtain from OCF approval to submit some type of report to OSU for college credit. This is not something which came up at the last minute. Both the writer and the Granville Personnel Department were aware of his plans to write a report at the end of the summer for college credit The only problem at the moment is contents. I think we should do whatever we can to help Bill. He is one of the best summer employees I ever had.
