Air samples taken at Travelers Rest on February 28-29, 1972 indicate an unusually severe fiber problem at the Model A expanding furnace. A sample taken on February 28 while expanding SC #3 ore yielded concentrations of 5.6 fibers longer than 5 microns per cc. A sample taken early the next morning when they began to expand Libby #2 ore yielded 12.4 fibers. Approximately two hours later, a sample yielded 36 fibers. The Increasing fiber count indicates that the Libby #2 ore being expanded at that time had an unusually high fiber content and dust control on this furnace is non-existent. Additionally, the above 5 level while expanding SC ore indicates a great deal of recirculating fibers. It is recommended that a Bureau of Mines approved, dust mask be mandatory for th>furnace operator and bagger at all times. I realize that this may be a difficult policy to control, but the Other samples-taken during Redl-Earth bagging ylelded-~l*X_fibers (large bagging station) and 3.5 fibers (small baggi It is interesting to note that the high fiber coun< ! where bagging of small plastic bags of Terra-lite <7 an hour before. m> i V :C \
