Dear Mr. Miller I would like to thank you for your hospitality in my recent visit to Vermont and your mines The trip was most enjoyable and very instructive in the particular problems of talc mining I have received the materials which you forwarded and will use these in establishing the protocol for a prospective survey of your talc miners As we discussed I have also forwarded with this communication several articles on the effects of childhood respiratory problems upon adult respiratory disease as well as the coexistent effects of cigarette smoking and industrial exposure In addition I have forwarded one reference with regard to the problems of developing predicted equations for respiratory function parameters As Vernon had noted there are indeed problems particularly with younger individuals but in a prospective study these difficulties are obviated by using the individual as his own control The problem then becomes one simply of defining what is expected change of pulmonary function with time and these data are available with less variability than for the predictability of individual single time point pulmonary function studies Once again I enjoyed my visit very much and I look forward to working with you in the future I will forward to you a protocol as soon as possible I may contact you to discuss some of the individual details of the protocol prior to mailing it to you in its completed form Until then I remain Sincerely yours R.Wies R.
