Thomaes __________ i i Dear Sirs: 1 -----------1-- The purpose of this letter is to inform you of develop ments since I last wrote to you on March 30. As to technical considerations, the Planning Group met on April 20 as scheduled. The animal experimentation program as described on the yellow sheet attached to my March 30th letter was reconfirmed without major changes. (I have recently been given to understand that the several companies with particular interest in acetylene-derived monomer are likely to supplement their participation sufficiently to provide for adding a second test concentration level.) There was disappointment that information from current research on this matter in Europe had not been forthcoming as a guide to the optimum selection of inhalation exposure levels. Subsequently, by virtue of an advance guarantee from one company, we authorized Dr. B. D. Dinman (in charge of the acroosteolysis work at The University of Michigan), who was already in Europe, to explore further as recommended by the Planning Group. On his first contact, with Dr. Lef6vre of Solvay et Cie in Brussels on May 15, Dr. Dinman was advised that no information whatever could be disclosed pending approval of all of the participating com panies. He was told MCA's interest would be considered at a meeting of the sponsors scheduled for the first week in June. WC 000005622 May 26, 1972 Page Two If your company is in a position to enhance a favorable outcome of this consideration, it might be helpful if you would communicate promptly with the companies involved. We do not know which companies are so engaged, but doubtless you will be able to guess accurately as to those most likely to be. It is not necessary, of course, to await the final selection of exposure levels to proceed with other aspects of arrangements here. As soon as firm financial commitments have been received -- and only a couple are still outstanding -- we can seek formal MCA approval. Where pro rata commitment limits originally submitted in connection with the $365,000 program would not be exceeded to fund the $165,000 program now in mind, we are assuming no re-commitment to be nee<}ed.
