As the report indicates, I regard the situation disclosed by the analysis to be a definitely hazardous one, provided the filter pad portrays the effects of a characteristic ex posure. X do not consider such an atmosphere a safe one and I feel that there is certainly a necessity for certain precautionary measures. I have certain reservations about the adequacy of respirators. If they are worn carefully and faith fully they are likely to be satisfactory, but it Is sometimes difficult to have them used consistently and In the proper manner. N9848 Filter from Respirator In Use one week by an employee of Fisher Body Norwood Division* Sample submitted by Dr* R* D Mudd* The operation done by the employee consisted of discing down lead seams, the disc containing circulating water* Filter in use about 36 hra* Lead la*0 mgs* On the basis of a pulmonapy ventilation of 20 cubic meters during this period of time the lead content of the atmosphere, if it all passed through the respirator, ws about 20 mg* ?b per 10 cu.m* of air* For safety there should, be not more than 5 mg* per 10 cu.m* The atmosphere of the plant in the immediate vicinity of this operation is therefore definitely hazardous and would be expected to produce lead poisoning unless adequate protection were provided* Reported! 7-2-1955 N9848.01 6 000331
