King Mfrs. of OBJECTIVE To test samples prepared at Niagara Falls of 244 in Freeman resins. . DISCUSSION We were able to duplicate the results, obtained at Niagara Falls, in Freeman's laboratory. Their results on samples mixed at Port Washington were actually better than ours at Niagara. For example, in a promoted resin Freeman got a viscosity of 1000 and a thix index of 3.0 compared to 2.7 which we had developed at Niagara. A Cab-O-Sil sample made up at Freeman yielded a disappointing (?) 1.5 thix index and a viscosity which was 1/3 the target at equivalent loading. We decided this was probably due to using an old lab sample of silica. This did not detract from their enthusiasm for 244, however, which was demonstrated by their order for 350 lb. of 244 to make 10-drum trial lots. Charlie Ross pointed out that even if their trials go well, our penetration could be relatively slow. Freeman will not try to cover up their use of 244 and they will have to develop business with the new system. He does not foresee any real problems, but they are still concerned about screen plugging. Ross asked a few questions about toxicology, but took the position that asbestos probably is no worse than silica. Everyone in the Freeman plant resents having to work in the very dusty, silica addition area, he said. He agreed with us that recognizing a hazard is the most important part of the battle.
