COMMENTS
R. E. Raines was monitored while stripping approximately 12 ft. of old insulation from 3/4" steam line just outside the telephone room in the basement of Bldg. 701. While stripping the insulation, Mr. Raines wore a disposable respirator, coveralls, gloves, and shoe covers. The area was barricaded, signs posted, and a portable water sprayer was used to wet down the insulation.
Evaluation of the sample indicated a level of asbestos fibers less than the allowable exposure limit. However, the fiber concentration was higher than expected for this type of job. It is possible that the insulation was not wetted down thoroughly enough prior to removal due to the fact that some of it was difficult to reach.
Please notify employee of exposure results.

Personal samples were collected while Mr. Agosti and Mr. Wheeler were stripping insulation from aerator and connecting lines on the second level in 704 Powerhouse. The levels of asbestos fibers found were in excess of OSHA standard of 2 fibers >5 pm/cc. We recommend the insulators continue to wear protective clothing, respirators, gloves and the area to be stripped wet down. Please inform IH Department of the next stripping job in this area and inform concerned employees of their exposure.
