YOUR REF. 28th August, 1961. Dear Dr. Kehoe, _ Thank you very much indeed for your long letter of August lAth replying to the various points that we raised during your visit to us last April. I am sorry that I should have put you to so much trouble, especially when I know how heavily you are committed in your day-to-day working affairs. I myself returned from my vacation to-day and will let you have the answers to your queries as soon as possible, particularly with relation to the numbers of copies that we shall be pleased to have of your "Harbern" lectures. I will bear in mind that you do not wish these copies to be distributed in a whole-sale fashion, but rather that they should be sent to those people who would appreciate them and find them useful. I await your progress report on the comparative toxicity of TML and TEL with great interest end note that from the practical viewpoint, the manufacturing standards of safety with respect to TML are the same as those applied to TEL and that these standards have been shown to be effective from the experience of Baton Rouge, This is reassuring to us, since we are, as you know, engaged in manufacturing TML now at Korthwich, though not yet on a large scale. As regards the disposal of sludge by weathering, our reasons for feeling not too happy about this method are based on results of work undertaken by our French affiliate. I will obtain a copy of this report as soon as possible and have it sent out to you. Vie are at present in the process of organising a trial of this method of disposal at the Esso Refinery at Fawley and I will let you have these results when they become available. We have not been too happy on the efficacy of the charcoal canister in handling TML, and at present our Research & Development Department are engaged on a programme in which charcoal canisters will be exposed to various concentrations of TML under variable conditions, and when this trial has been completed, I will let you have these results. * It is reassuring that after a full year of occupational exposure to the conditions that exist in the gasoline handling industry, the men so engaged show no evidence of having absorbed any lead in the course of their work. This, of course, bears out the tesults that you obtained in the trial in the garage in San Francisco. I would much appreciate copies of any report that you may be making on this further investigation confirming the San Francisco results, which I would like to have available for distribution to those Authorities whom ve visited during the course of our European tour last summer.
