In response to your letter of Februairy 11, 1976 outlining the OSHA requirements on the use and application of asbestos which is becoming a- critical situation for B&W I wish to advise as follows:
1. The Material Ordering standard 4A2-2A1-4A44 under "GASKETS" presently states that gaskets are to be ordered purchased to sire for economical reasons. However, this standard does permit cutting of gaskets from gasket sheet stock in special cases. In my opinion, the standard should be revised to insist.on purchased gaskets and the sheet material should be removed from folioed stock.
2. It is my understanding that purchased sheet .gaskets used in our shops as received meet the OS.-LA requirements and no change in our ordering procedure is required if we use the- purchased gaskets without chance. By copy, 0. J. Fisher is requested to advise if this is not correct.
3. There are no (FPG) Std. S/0 W/s specifying gaskets to be cut in B&W shops.
4. TLT fans and RAH do require caskets to be cut in the shop. By copy, will M. S. Merritt & R. S. Riser review their orders for gaskets to be cut from sheet casket material.
5. FPG Components Engineering have been in contact with Purchasing to determine possible substitute materials but to date, have been unable to establish replacement materials.
6. Asbestos packing is currently being specified in lineal feet (LF) by Engineering & Graphics and the exact lengths required have not been established. If packing can no longer be cut in the shops, it will be a considerable task to establish cut lengths required. The 4A2-2A1-4A44 under "PACKING" will need to be revised to indicate revised instructions to Engineering & Graphics.
7. Attached is a copy of my review of the (FPG) Std S/0 W/S for your information.
