Dear Doctor Machle:-
In accordance with our discussion, we are sending you a sketch and a photograph of our standard eductor standpipe showing the location of the brass washer which we have placed on one of these standpipes.
About two years ago, the Socony-Vacutun Oil Company, of East Providence, Rhode Island, ordered a new standpipe, acting on our recommendation.. At this particular plant, they unload upwards of forty-five drums per mix, and naturally the time consumed is much greater than is to be desired.
Before the standpipe was put in service, we suggested that they place a washer around the standpipe just below the wash gasoline outlet,so that when the gasoline hit the washer it would form a spray hitting the top sides of the drum, thereby washing the fluid off. On the original installation, this washer was spot welded about one half inch below the outlet of the wash gasoline. The Socony-Vacuum Oil Company has been now using it for about two years and, so far, we have had no reports from the Manufacturing Department that the drums returned are unsatisfactory. The time saving is considerable. In the last unloading that the writer observed, forty-five drums of fluid were unloaded, and the drums washed and bunged in ten hours. Another very definite advantage is the amount of fumes coming from the drum as the gasoline is being added are cut down to a minor degree. In the use of this contraption, we have found that it has been necessary to merely open the valve for about eight seconds allowing the wash gasoline to spray the drum, and then close the valve. From any examination we have made of the drum, it seemed to be satisfactorily free from Ethyl fluid after this type of washing, and it does eliminate the use of a large amount of gasoline for this purpose.
We would be interested in having your comments on the medical aspect of using a smaller amount of gasoline in the removal of any fluid left in the drum after it has been emptied the first time.
If such a scheme is adopted for washing drums, we suggest that a brass washer be attached to a collar underneath, through which would run a stud bolt. These could be attached to any of our existing standpipes by merely removing the foot valve. For any new installations going out, it is recommended that a brass
