Respirable Asbestos Fibers - Lab 114
V The concentration of respirable asbestos fibers in Lab 114 was measured during the last two weeks of January. The asbestos fiber count was <0.1 fiber per cubic centimeter (cc) of air. This is substantially lower than present allowable level set by OSHA (5 fibers/cc air) as a safe working environment. (The OSHA exposure value will drop to 2 fibers/cc air on July 1, 1976.)
Three breathing zone air samples were collected over 6 hour periods using the procedures recommended by OSHA. Millipore filter No. MAWP 037AO and MSA Monitaire Model S Personal Pump (serial No. B-06-0491) were worn with the open face filter in the breathing zone by Mr. H. McKinney, B. Doggett, and B. Reiss, The asbestos fiber count of these three samples was <0. 1 fiber/cc of air.
The fourth air sample was taken as a ceiling limit sample. The filter(open face) was placed 1 foot above the asbestos insulated lines of the lab micro unit for a 4 hour sampling period. A worker in Lab 114 should never have this level of exposure to asbestos fibers from the microunits. Again the asbestos fiber count was <0. 1 fiber/cc of air.
From the above fiber counts and OSHA standards. Lab 114 can be con sidered not dangerous as regards exposure to asbestos fibers. Additional air monitoring will not be needed until modifications to the equipment are made which may increase asbestos fiber exposure.
The asbestos counts were made by National Loss Control Service Corporation, Long Grove, Illinois (Ref: ESR-284-76) using Phase Microscopy.
. The air sampling data is recorded in Research Notebook 22976, 8-12,
