February 5* 19^2 Mr. C. E. Chase, V.'ashington State Apple Commission, Wenatchee, Washington. Dear Mr. Chase; I find I have neglected replying to your letter of November 2 5 , and--I want to make amends by expressing my thanks for the copy of the SPRAY RESIDUE REPORT, which was forwarded to me. I might make one comment which is not intended to be unduly critical, with respect to Mr. Combelic's handling of my letter in the recox'd. Mr, Combelic may have felt justlfied in eliminating certain portions of my letter which he considered irrelevant, but I will say that in so doingj modified considerably the expression of my attitude -"to which my opinion had been asked. This was recorded by at least one man In the Food arid Drugs Administration as deliberate when he commented to me on an opinion which I had expressed in tbs record which did not seem to be quite In accord with my pre vious position. I was put somewhat on the defensive thereby, and I felt It necessury to tender my complete letter as an expression of my position. This is not relevant in any w a y to our discussion, and I merely mention it as you spoke of the matter In your letter. I am very glad to have this record, but I am particularly glad to have had an opportunity to talk with you and to learn your point of view. I understand that tills whole matter is in abeyance for some time and probably for the duration of the present unpleasantness. By that time, we shoulu have some additional useful information. Cordially yours, RAK ef Robert A. Kehoa, M. D. 0008493 N9730 COMMI SSI ONERS: REU BEN G. BEN Z, Ya k i ma A LBER T CU I LLl ER, Ro u t e b , Ya k i ma c. a . One of the bright spots in my memory for some tine will be the splendid visit I had with you and how much I appre ciated the time you gave me on Friday. I have just written Dr. Ruth, asking him to send you a copy of the Spray Residue Report. Vie have quite a number of these on hand here, but they don't contain the pictures of injury to fruit from washing. In other vroras, we didn't have enough pictures for all our copies of the report. You will note that this report was put out in early 1933. You will also note on page 17-a of section 4 extracts from your letter written April 7th and received by the committee on April 19th. as I recall it, this letter was received just after the report had been put together and your letter was placed in prior to extracts from some of the publications. I don't believe all of your letter was quoted. Mr. Combelic handled this, and I am not certain, but I hope sufficient was quoted to properly express your view-s at that time. I think you will be interested in page 13 of section 4 wherein it is pre sumed at least from the Court's remark that in testifying at that time Dr. Carlson would not or did not testify that he knew of any case of . lead or arsenic poisoning resulting from eating apples sprayed with ar senate of lead. The defendant in this case was Washington Dehydrated Food Company, which is Dr. Cardiff's organization. I arm more than sorry that you did not have a copy of this before this time as there is a lot of information in it that would have been of interest to you I am sure. If you desire any additional copies, I can supply you with two or three, -which would, however, not contain the pic tures starting on page 12 of section 2 and ending on page 21 of the same section.
