CONSTRUCTION ASBESTOS REMOVAL PROCEDURE PURPOSE: The purpose of this procedure is to define those activities necessary to specifically cover the removal and disposal of asbestos containing insulation. POLICY: It is Monsanto C.E.D. Construction Policy to provide a safe and healthful work place for our contractor employees. To support this policy we will ensure that appropriate safety procedures and health considerations are incorporated into this procedure for the identification and elimination of asbestos materials. RESPONSIBILITIES: / It will be the responsibility of the Mosanto Site Construction Manager to: 1. Identify the type of insulation to be removed, asbestos or non asbestos. 2. Instruct personnel of the hazards of asbestos and the proper handling methods. 3. Inform the Plant Industrial Hygiene Department of the location, type and magnitude of the work to be performed. 4. Ensure that established work practices are followed. 5. Adhere to all OSHA and EPA rules and regulations, see attachment. PROCEDURE: Protective Equipment: 1. Coveralls are required for the removal of asbestos insulation. 2. Respirators must be worn while handling asbestos materials. 3. Gloves are required for asbestos remoxral. 4. Head covering is required for asbestos removal. Removal: 1. While removing the protective jacket, it will be necessary to exercise caution to avoid the emission of airborne fibers. Respirators shall be worn during this step of removal. ^ 0004^4 LAM022363 -2- 2. if the insulation has been identified as asbestos, then the proper protective equipment must be worn before removal can continue. 3. Wet the insulation completely prior to removal to prevent the emission of airborne fibers. The insulation is to be kept wet during the removal operation. 4. Bag and seal the insulation in plastic bags marked, "Asbestos Only". Bags must be removed from the work area daily and disposed of in a dumpster designated for asbestos. 5. Cover unprotected ends of the insulation at the end of the work day while the job is in progress. 6. The disposal of asbestos containing material will be coordinated through the Environmental Control Department. 7. Barricade the work area, where asbestos insulation is being removed, with red barricade tape. 8. Removal will be monitored by Monsanto's Industrial Hygiene Department and Monsanto C.E.D.
