MORTONSON RUTHERFORD DATI JULY 2 2 , 1 9 7 6 SUBJECT PRODUCT LABELS ASBESTOS WARNING >- j. Walt Butterfield of Jim Walter Research called me today to inquire whether we are now cutting or plan to put a warning on our labels to the effect that the product contains asbestos. They have decided to include a warning statement on the labels of all of their asbestos-fibrated coatings and adhesives even though they are aware there is no reason to believe any fibers will be released during application. Walt read the warning to me: and while I couldn't write it down verbatim, the substance of it is "the product contains asbestos fibers and 05HA, a Department of the Federal wvernment, has determined that prolonged breathing of asbestos fibers may cause cancer or Asbestosis". I told him we did not now include such a warning and knew of no plans to do so. Is there some regulation in the morass of edicts of the Government which would cause then to decide such a warning is necessary even though all evidence suggests no hazard exists? WHM:pb ccs Mr. C.T.
