Chronic Wasting Disease

First recognized in 1967 as a clinical `wasting syndrome among farmed mule deer in Colorado, Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) remains a considerable threat to both farmed and wild cervid populations across the country. CWD is a slow and progressive disease with a lengthy incubation period that has now been detected in 25 states. Infected deer, elk, and moose may not present visible symptoms until years after the time of infection. Even as visible symptoms (such as weight loss, stumbling and tremors) become observable, the commonality of these symptoms among cervid maladies prevents CWD from being readily diagnosed. At this time there is no way to conclusively identify the presence of CWD within an animal until a necropsy has been performed. With no known treatment or vaccine available, CWD continues to prove fatal in all documented cases.
Many state and tribal agencies that are dealing with CWD often divert money from other conservation programs, which has resulted in initiatives to combat CWD being both
underfunded and coming at the expense of other conservation priorities. H.R. 4454 (the Chronic Wasting Disease Management Act) and S. 2252 (the Chronic Wasting Disease Support for States Act), introduced by members of the Congressional Sportsmens Caucus, would provide much needed resources to the agencies tasked with managing this disease and would also allow for additional investment in applied research on strategies to reduce
the prevalence and spread of CWD in the future.
