Gardner'* experiments, to which the eenbers of the asbestos textile group contributed such substantial sun, is quite under standable. Plepse do not feel that Z have neglected to follow thr matter since Dr. Gardner's death. As you will recall, I had been pressing Dr* Gard ner for a finel report for n period of approximately two years before his death, wily to bTM set cith the very valid plea that he was ovemorketf tnd unc er-staffed because of his inability to obtain or retrin qualified msn during the war. Since Dr. Gardner's death Dr. A. J. Vorvaid has suc ceeded him as Director of Research at Saranac Laboratory and Dr. Lance (now retired fren Metropolitan Life Insurance Com pany) has become a Trustee cf the Trudeau Foundation. Under date of June 14th Dr. Vorwaid wrote us as follows* "The delay in completing the monograph on asbestosis is no less disturbing to us than it is to you. w# appreciate its urgency for guidance in the solution of problems pertaining to your workers. Every effort Is being made by us to bring it to con clusion. Believe me, however, it is a monumental task. The data of all the studies and observations ir` i~'w *r rm rin *n f t , - 2 made by us during the past number of years Is voluminous. It is not easy to collate It and direst It for purposes of a monograph that mlyht serve as a basis for guidance. Therefore, as you imply, It must be factual and not con jectural. Ter more than a year prior to thia tine, in response to repeated requests, we had received repeated assurances fros Dr. Vorwald t)jat the monograph mould be reedy within a natter of weeics.
