Dear Sir/Madam: 89920008349 RE: 8EHQ-0791-1310 With reference to our letter of November 4,1991, attached is a copy of the final "report" from the epidemiology study conducted by Johns Hopkins University on workers exposed to organic and inorganic lead at Du Pont's Chambers Works site in Deepwater, NJ. The report is in the form of a manuscript, "Decrements in Neurobehavioral Performance Associated with Mixed Exposure to Organic and Inorganic Lead", proposed for publication in the American Journal of Epidemiology. This is the most recent submission to EPA in support of our TSCA 8(e) notification of July 19,1991 in which we reported the findings from this study. Subsequently, in response to an Agency request, we supplied supplemental information on October 24,1991. Du Pont disagrees with some of the conclusions implied by the report and to provide perspective in this complex area of interpretation, attached are Comments synthesizing the critique received from Du Pont's independent Epidemiology Review Board and the authors' response to the specific issues raised by the Board, (in the Comments, the manuscript is referred to as "Neurobehavioral Dysfunction Associated with Mixed Exposure to Organic and Inorganic Lead". This was the original title of the paper (report) but it was changed to the present one by the authors following their review of the Comments). However, Du Pont firmly believes that under the conditions*of exposure studied, the findings do not provide substantive evidence that inorganic lead or lead alkyls cause neurobehavioral effects. These findings and conclusions have been communicated to all Chambers Works employees. Employees at other Du Pont sites that handle lead alkyls and customers are in the process of being notified.
