.Arr^> ETHYL CORPORATION INTER-OFFICE CORRESPONDENCE (jJJ^ TO J. G. Burdick, M. D, ADDRESS Houston FROM Henry M. Taylor address New Orleans subject Asbestos Fiber Environmental Survey DATE October 18, 1972 This is in response to your request for evaluation.of certain asbestos handling procedures (incidental to production and maintenance work effort) at the Houston plant. SUMMARY: Concerning potential asbestos hazard, the data collected and displayed in the attached table indicates operator respiratory protection is not necessary during: 1. Asbestos material handling in the stores area; 2. Sodium cell insulag scraping; 3. Sodium cell dismantling; 4. Listing tape application and/or removal. However, during sodium cell insulag scraping and sodium cell disman tling other particulate levels may at intermittent times become irritating to the operator. Hence, operator use of Bureau of Mines (BOM) approved particulate respirators during these operations is advised. A BOM approved particulate respirator is recommended adequate pro tection for the asbestos levels found during band saw operation and TEL still insulation dismantling and cleanup. EQUIPMENT AND METHOD: Air conveyed asbestos was collected by personal and environmental sampling upon open face Millipore type AA filters (37 mm, 0. 8 y. pore size) using MSA Montair pumps operating at a sampling rate of 2 l/m. The samples were mounted in a high-viscosity solution of membrane filter material for counting. Asbestos fibers were counted at 400 x magnification using phase contrast illumination with a Leitz Labolux' microscope. Data handling followed that of generally accepted con servative good practice since standard methods have not as yet been established.
