From the Department of Commerce, it has been learnt that in 1976 the total consumption of asbestos within the United States was 726,000>short tons. Friction materials industry used 63,800 tons or 8.8% of the total. During that same year, Abex Corporation purchased 8,229 short tons for its domestic production.
