PANSAC who make FVC bags by extrusion have had an enroloyee die of cancer and Maltoni's diagnosis is "multicentric ASL" related to VCM exposure. The hospital pathologist is in agreement and I think we should take this as likely to be a confirmed diagnosis. The nan's history is Died Pansac Extrusion Dept Pansac Conmercial Depts First symptoms Hospitalised 6/4/83 (Age 46) 1967-1975 1976-1983 7/3/83 26/3/83 This is the second death at PANSAC. In the ASL register I have always included It 01, a man who died at age 36 on 16/4/71 after 3 years exposure. The primary tumour may have been of the pericardium. Maltoni had seen the data on this first case in 1971 and recalled it when the VCM/ASL connection became clear in 1973/4. Maltoni has tended to push this first case which I have.labelled as "not homogeneous with other ASL cases". The disturbing feature is that there new seen to be 2 "cases" at a PVC fabrication plant with a small number of exposed employees. Maltoni is reported to have said 2 out of 80 exposed employees at PANSAC have had VCM related tumours. Hearsay evidence suggests that PANSAC extruded PVC in a totally unventilated workshop arri in the 60's and early 70's the VCM concentration in the atmosphere might have been quite high. Nevertheless it now looks as if we have the likelihood of a reasonably well authenticated ASL case attributable to VCM in the fabrication industry. The case had a short exposure (8 years) ending in 1975. None of this makes sense when one considers that the total Italian VCM/PVC industry has had only 3 ASL cases! Why should an Italian FVC fabricator have 1/2 ASL cases out of a workforce of 80? 2- A copy of the Montedison telex with details is appended. Perhaps we will hear more from the Italian delegate at the Porsgrunn meeting on 26 August. It will be interesting for example to learn if there were any repercussions in the Italian media'when details of the case became known. Though "the death occurred in April, news is only now filtering through to us; it would appear that such an event does not cause the furore which would have occurred in 1974/5. R&S 002443
