The Aberdeen Plant uses three chemicals from the list of 17. Those chemicals and/or compounds are: lead and lead compounds, cadmium and cadmium compounds, and benzene. Lead and cadmium are used in the compounding operation and benzene has been found in our waste oil sent out for fuels blending. Lead remaining in empty lead bags accounts for 99% of our lead emissions and more than 75% of the total pounds of the three chemicals emitted from the Aberdeen Plant. Consequently, most of our reduction effort is aimed at reduction of empty lead bags. The reduction in lead emissions in 1992 will come from the use of our bulk lead system on Line III. Further reductions by 1995 will be accomplished by consolidation of varieties of leads and lead stabilizer substitutions. There were two reasons for the much higher than normal lead emissions reported in 1988. The highest volume year for flexible compounds occurred in 1988 and the product mix that year was higher in lead-containing compounds. The reduction in cadmium emissions in 1991-1992 will result from the increasing use of cadmium-free stabilizers. Please call me if you have any questions concerning this information. K. G.
