Stickles, Counsel Mr. Smith, President, after greeting the representatives, called the meeting to order at 9:00 A.M. MINUTES OF PREVIOUS MEETING The Chairman announced that the minutes of the previous meetings held on June 19 and 20, 1963 had been distributed. Unless there was a request for a reading or any cor rections or additions to be made thereto, a motion for their acceptance vould be entertained. Upon motion duly made, seconded and unanimously passed, it was RESOLVED: That the minutes of the meetings held on June 19 and 20, 1963 be accepted as distributed. REPORT OF THE PRESIDENT It is very gratifying to see so many in attendance at this annual meeting representing all but two Active Members. In addition to the delegates and alternates, there are present several members of the very important'Data Book and Technical Committee. They held a meeting last evening to clear up some controversial Issues and these may be reported upon in addition to their regular report. The interest and enthusiasm of the members has been manifested in more ways than one during this past fiscal year which, to me, has passed very quickly. Industry prob lems - some of which are due to proposed legislation by tate and Federal governing bodies concerning brake linings; national problems - civil rights, unemployment due to automation in some* cases but still a part of the industrial revolution which, without controls, will automatically adjust itself as in the past; the untimely death o our late President and the precarious situation existing because of the vacancy in the Vice-Presidency; the alleviation of poverty, although there have been the indigent poor ever since historical records have been kept; and finally international involve ments which seem never ending and never solved because of the political aspirations of those who seek power .and, if in power, do not do better than their predecessors. All of these factors, plus our own business concerns, keep us so preoccupied that a year goes by before we ere aware of it and tie are again together to hear What our Institute has accomplished and to help resolve some of the problems which have been studied and reported upon by various committees. At these sessions, you will have the opportunity of meeting those who are the newer representatives of our members, welcoming and making them a part of our organisation and aiding them in understanding the Institute's operation. If, during the course of these meetings, you wish enlightenment as to Why certain actions have been taken or the background for certain procedures and policies, please do not hesitate to request such information. A knowledge of the functions and activities of the Institute will result in the awareness of Why this organisation must continue to function and the benefits accruing to each of us.
