I
On September 9# Messrs. Hinson, Jobe, Eaton, Dobson, Qaohee, HoCarty, Blair, Badeoaker and MacAlpins discussed the pros and cons of the Kaylo and Thernobestos nethods of manufacturing line silica insulation*
The following sunrnarizes briefly, the advantages and disadvantages of the two processes as disoussedt
A* Advantages of Kaylo
1. Excellent opportunity for cost reduotion 2. Combined autoclaving and drying 3. Wet processing of fiber h. High ohrysotile fiber oontent 5. Quick line
.6. Uses sand as a raw material
7. Apparent rapid processing of orders
8 Smaller space requirements
9. Sections nest veil
B* Disadvantages of Eaylo Process
1* Higher WXB factor 2* Cannot pan cact small sizes 3* Repairs to pans U* Uses a parting agent 5* Uses a cardboard liner 6* Can make only a limited number of each else 7* Apparently must maintain moisture in product before autoclaving 8* Large number of individual molds required 9* Blow hole 6 in product 10* High trim loss in finishing 11* Apparently must maintain a high inventory 12* No hard surface skin on the product 13* Broken corners liu High labor cost on bloak 15, Quality below ours in general 16* Poor appearance 17* No large sices 18* Dependent on human element
C* Advantages of Thermobestos Process
1* Lower conductivity 2, Less dependent on human clement 3* Hardness U* Cleanliness 5* General appearance 6. Better blocks

C* Advantages of Theraobeetoa Process
7* Large pipe slses available
0* Disadvantages of Theraobsstos Procaas
1* Cooking of Jell 2 Frequent proceaa aheoka 3* Palamination U* Process cannot make K-20 (debatable) 5* Process cannot make formula changes (debatable)
E, It was the contention of those present that the following should be donei
A* Make a dimensional survey cn Kaylo (assigned to Don Qaches).
B. Send Thormobeatoa to Kaylo for teat in the autoclave - drying combination* (B L* Himon to contact M. BrileyJ
C. Consideration to be given to research projects on coniined autoclaving and drying, wet processing of fiber, increased chryaotile content, use of quick lime, and the effects of maintaining a moisture content before autoclaving.
