As you will note, the majority of our high school graduates are planning to enter college this fall to prepare themselves for future positions in in dustry and professions. College years bring added responsibility to teen agers and only through self-discipline can fulfillment bring reward. There are many avenues opening up; established practices are being questioned and the challenge or the unknown greets the freshman. The development of a well-rounded individual is the goal of most colleges. Today, it is important that youth invest their very best; to set a pattern of high moral standards; of high educational standards; of high standards of physical and social enjoyment so that they may be better fitted to become worthwhile citizens when they take over the responsibility of our nation. To those who have received their "Sheepskin" on completion of college requirements, may they, too, "give to the world the best that you have and the best will come back to you." (fiuuUuzte&f SANDRA TAPPAN is a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University, Blooming ton, Illinois from which she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Sandra had a double major in Drama and F.nglish, receiving a Teaching Certificate for secondary schools with her English ma jor. Sandra's talents are by no means singular and she has made an outstand ing record for herself during her college years, having attended "Wesleyan on par tial scholarship and full assistantship. She was a member of Masquers Drama Society, Theta Alpha Phi (National Honorary Dramatic Fraternity) and Vice-president one year. Black Book (campus literary publication) ; she at tained Dean's Honor Roll one semester each year. Sophomore through Senior; received Senior Honors Project as sole costume designer for University major stage production. Sandra's summer work in theatre costume design includes Timberlake Playhouse, Mt. Carroll, Illinois, Freshman year; Summer Stock, Wesle yan University, Sophomore and Senior years, and University ol Chicago, Junior year. Santlra will enroll at University of Iowa in September where she has been awarded a full scholastic fellowship for graduate study and will work toward her Master's Degree in Costume Designing. .Sandra is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Tappan ana "Woody", the proud father, is our well-known supervising auditor in Western Region. 0007-SWP-000107463 JACK NESSNER is a graduate of Loy ola University, Chicago where he re ceived a B.S. in Psychology on February 4, 1968. During Jack's first two years of college he continued -working at a local drug store where he had worked during high school days, and during his last two years he was employed as a Teller and Account Clerk at the Concordia Savings and Loan Association. After graduation Jack enjoyed a two-weeks vacation in Nassau, prior to becoming a teacher in one of the Chicago schools. Jack's goal is to do counseling in the field of Psyrhology. Jack is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Nessner, and John was assistant to C. E. Rutledge until his retirement in February. BRUCE BARTON POGUE is a grad uate of Bradley University, Peoria, where he received a B. S. degree from the college ol Business Administration. Bruce has been a member of the Amer ican Marketing Association . . . and Manager and Drummer of a local rock 'n roll combo. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Pogue, Credit Manager of our Peoria-Main Branch. Bruce's future Plans include obtaining a graduate's degree in Business. J. STEVEN ROUSH is a graduate of Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, where he received a B. S. in Business Ad ministration. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Fraternity, Drake Accounting Club, and Administrative Business Man agement Society. Steve is going to work for Lybrand, Ross Brothers & Montgom ery Public Accountants, Los Angeles, California. Allen had parts in two Wisconsin Players Produc tions: Hamlet and Julius Caesar. For one year he went throughout the state as State Master Councilor. Order of DeMolay. His major is History and he has been admitted to the Law School at the University of Wisconsin. Allen is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Trapp and his father. Ted. is Branch Manager, La crosse, Wisconsin. KAY WOLFE is a graduate of the Uni versity of Minnesota and is the very attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. L. Wolfe, Dealer Representative, Min neapolis, Minnesota. Sandra will enter the University of Minnesota Hospital in Medical Technology. GARY RAYMOND CORNWELL is a graduate of the University of Northern Iowa. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. M. Cornwell, and was employed as a part time Bookkeeper at our Cedar Rap ids, operation. Gary was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Social Fraternity, a member of the American Marketing Association, and 1967 Campus Home coming Chairman. Gary's future plans will be to join the U. S. He has been active in the Key Club, Spanish Club and the Art Depart ment Workshop where he displayed some unusual art projects. He has been photographer for the school newspaper and a member of the Newspaper Adver tising Staff. Robin received the Park For est Art Scholarship where he was in competition with six other high schools. He will attend Illinois State University in Normal this fall. Robin is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Rutledge, Region al Manager Credits & Accounting. REBECCA JEAN KATAYANAGI is a graduate of Lakcview High School, Chi cago, where she has been a member of Korelles (fund raising club) and the Girls' Athletic Association. Becky has also been working part time in the Chi cago office while attending school. She plans to attend a Junior College this iirst year and then transfer to a Teach er's College. She plans to become a teacher in the primary grades. Becky is the daughter of Mrs. Kimiko Katayanagi. Statistical Clerk in the Chicago office. DON SUMMERS JR. is a graduate of Glenbard East High School, Lombard, Illinois where he has participated in football, baseball and basketball. Don will attend Northern Illinois University this fall where he plans to major in Special Education Teaching. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. P. He is the son of Mary Baker, Assistant Manager at our Cham paign operation, where Gary worked as a part time stock boy for two years. His main activities included Cross Country (Captain 1968) track-lettering in both sports, and he also participated in the band- He was selected "Boy of the Month" for his accomplishments and recognition of outstanding qualities of leadership and honored by the Ex change Club of Champaign. Gary will enter the University of Illinois in the fall. KATHLEEN ELLEN DOYLE is a graduate of Bogan High School, Chica go, Illinois. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John P. Doyle, Manager at our W. 79th Street Branch. Kathleen was ac tive in the Senior Girls Club, Girls Ath letic Association, Drama Club, Secretar ial Club, and Pep Club. She was also an Attendance Office Aid and worked on the Graduation Committee. After grad uation Kathy will work in the Stock holder Records Department of the Commonwealth Edison Company, where she will become the third daughter of the Doyle family to be employed by the Edison Company. I GREGORY ALAN BORLAND is a graduate of Central High School, Dav enport, Iowa. He is the son of Keith and Ardath Borland, his mother being Bookkeeper-Clerk at our Davenport op eration. HARMAN is a graduate of Washington Senior High School. He works as a part time stockman at our Cedar Rapids, Iowa operation. He will continue to work for S-W, hoping to someday become a Branch Manager. ROBERTA JAN INF, HUEBING is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton A. Huebing, Clint being Credit Manager at our Rotkfoid, Illinois-Main Branch. She is a graduate of Boylan Central Catholic High School, where she was ac tive in French Club 1 & 2, Sodality 2. 3, ft 4, Chorus 2 & 3, member of Future Secretaries Association, and an Illinois State Scholarship Finalist. Roberta also sang as part ol a trio called "We Three" in Boylan Variety Show in May, of 1968. She will attend Rock Valley College, Rockford, Illinois, and will follow a lib eral arts course. WOITH is a graduate of Bloomington High School, Blooming ton, Illinois, and is the son of Mr. ana Mrs. Robert L. Woith. Mike worked as a part time Stockkeeper and Sales help at our Bloomington Branch. He was a member of the Distributive Education Program, which is a cooperative plan between the school and business for the education of a student in business. His many activities included basketball, football, and he was also a member of the Chess Club. Mike plans on attending Illinois Central College, Peoria, Illinois. LINDA LINDSEY is a graduate of Richwoods High School, Peoria. Illinois. She was a member of the "Excalibur" staff (yearbook) and a member of the Quill & Scroll (honorary society recognizing student journalism). Linda also was a member of the GAA and FTA. Her fu ture plans will be to attend Illinois Cen tral College where she will major in Education or Liberal Arts. Linda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. V. Knudson, Manager at our Helena operation. Bob has been active in the Student Council, H-Club, and Russian Club, ami he enjoys basketball, track and baseball. He plans to attend Montana State College at Bozeman, Montana. GREGORY P. HUMBEL is a graduate of the Monroe High School, Monroe, Wisconsin. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Humbel, Manager at our Monroe Branch. His mother is also Credit Man ager in the Branch. Greg has been active in the high school chorus and is a mem ber of the Kiwanis sponsored Key Club. He attended the National Convention at Louisville, Kentucky last summer. He is also a member of the Distributive Education Program and represented the high school at the state competition at Green Lake, Wisconsin where he placed 7th in a held of 250. He has also been active in scouting, and was a counselor lor the past 2 summer at Canyon Camp, Apple River, Illinois. In 1964 he at tended the National Jamboree at Valley Forge. Greg is in a Student Exchange Program with the North Adams, Massa chusetts High School where he attended srhool for 10 days last fall. His future plans will be to enter Wisconsin State University at Eau Claire in the tall, where he will major in Business Administration. MARIANN CHERARDJ is a graduate of the Elizabeth Seton High School in South Holland, Illinois. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Guy Glterardi. Sales, Wesrem Chemical Coatings. Mariann was a member of the Student Coun cil, Art Club, and Glee Club, and she enjoys swimming. He was a member of the National Hon or Society and ranked 13th in his gradu ation class. His school activities have been centered around music, as he was in the Orchestra-Band and he placed three years in the All State Music Fes tival. For four years he held Rating 1 in String Bass solo at Iowa High School Music Association, State contests. His future plans will be to attend Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, where he will major in Chemical Engineering. Scott is the son of Mr. and Mrs. T. W. Haigh, Manager at our Oskaloosa Branch. PAULA WARE is a graduate of Dixon High School, Dixon, Illinois. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Ware, Manager at our Dixon Branch. Paula's many activities included GAA I & 2, Art Club, Science Club 3, Girl's Chorus, Treble Choir, FTA 2, 3, & 4, and she was also reporter on the Dixini, the school paper. She belonged to the Dra matics Club and performed in "South Pacific," "West Side Story," and "The Sound of Music." Paula plans to attend Western Illinois University, Macomb, Illinois, to become a speech teacher. RON WOLFE is a graduate of Cooper High School, Minneapolis, Minnesota, where he was a member of the National Honor Society. His school activities in cluded band and tennis. ELAINE BACH is a graduate of Mus kegon Catholic Central. She is the daugh ter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold E. Bach, Manager at our Muskegon operation, Elaine was Treasurer of her Junior Achievement Company and was on the "B" Honor Roll. Her future plans will be to attend Junior College where she will take a business course. THOMAS CLENNON is a graduate of Unity Senior High School, and is the son of Mr. & Mis. Leo Clennon. Tom worked as sales clerk and stock boy at our LTrbana operation. His many activities included four straight years of football, class Vice President in his Sophomore year, member of the Student Council in whit h he was President, Year book Senior Advisor. Ree, Branch Manager of our Knollwood PIa/.a Branch, St. Louis Park, Minnesota. Kathryn was President of Future Secretaries of Edina Club; mem ber of Home Ec. Club, member of YTeens and has worked part time at the Edina State Bank. She will have a Cali fornia vacation following graduation and then plans to attend Norniandale Jr. College this fall. DENNIS B. KURZROCK is a graduate of Dixon High School, Dixon, Illinois. He has worked as part time stock clerk at our Dixon Branch, and he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur L. Kurrrock. Dennis' interests have been centered around music, as he was a member of the Boy's Chorus. Mixed Chorus, Robed Choir, Madrigal, Chamber Choir, and N.C.I.C. Music Festival and District Music Festival. He was also a member ol the Dramatics Club, taking part in "Soutit Pacific," "West Side Story," and "The Sound of Music." Dennis also en joys basketball, football, and track, and he was active in the Chess Club, Library Club, and Spanish Club. Dennis will start this fall in the University of Illinois Circle Campus to work toward a degree in Engineering in Applied Physits. CHRISTINE BEHNKE is a graduate of Preble High School, Green Bay, Wis consin. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Behnke, and hei niotliei. Jeanne, is bookkeeper in our Green Bay Branch. Chris was a member of the Girls Athletic Association, Spanish Club, Future Teachers of America Club, Pep Club, Pi Sigma and Drama Club. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Dare and her mother is sales lady at our Des Moincs-West Branch. Jane was a member of Poster Booster Club and worked on make-up Commit tee for school plays. She will attend Northwest Missouri State Teachers College. SUZANNE MARIE MIDDENDORF is a graduate of Jerman Junior High School in Greensburg, Indiana. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Middendorf . . . Bob being Manager at our Greensburg Branch. Susanne at tended St. Mary's School in Greensburg where she was a choir member. All through her 8th year at Jerman Junior High, she had maintained a straight "A" average and was also a member of the Tru City Chapter of the National Junior Honor Society. Suzanne will at tend Greensburg High School where she will take a college preparatory course. She hopes to be a kindergarten teacher. DOUGLAS SUMMERS is a graduate of Lombard Junior High School. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. D. P. Summers, MWAZ Manager. While in Junior High. Doug's interests have been cen tered around sports, as he was active in basketball and baseball. He plans to at tend Glenbard East High School in the Fall. BRADLEY LINDSAY is a graduate of Connersville Junior High School, Connersville, Indiana. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Lindsay. His mother is Assistant Manager at the Connersville Branch and his father is Manager at the same operation. Bradley's interests have been centered around sports, as he was Student Manager of the Football and Basketball teams. He was also on the Honor Roll. Richard had participated in intra-mural sports all through junior high, and plans to attend John Hersey High School in the falL ANTHONY DON ROGERS is a grad uate of Lowell Junior High School, Princeton, Indiana. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Rogers . . . John being Manager at our Princeton operation. Tony's interests have been centered around sports, as he was a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. He was also a member of the Junior High School Choir. Tony plans to enter Princeton High School this fall. SHANNON O'NEAL is a graduate of Everett Dirksen Junior High School. Shannon is very active in gymnastics and will compete in the track meets in June. She also had one of the lead parts in the school play this year and hopes to con tinue in both fields in high school. Shan non will enter Thornridge High School in September. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. O'Neal, Chicago Division Manager. JAMES E. SCOTT, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Scott, Office and Credit Manager at our Evansville, Indiana-Main Branch, is a graduate of Stringtown Grammar School. While in school, Jim's interests were centered aiciuiul sports. He plans to enter North High School where he will be taking a College Prep course, majoring in General Business. (Sorry, no picture) 15 0007-SWP-000107477 JOHN NESSNER RETIRES John and Mac Nessner February 29, 1968 will be a day long remembered by John Nessner for it marked his retirement from S-W. In the course of a business career one has occasions to anticipate many events. In the culmination of such events a per son gains knowledge and experience, and in many cases, an entirely new outlook. Retirement, itself, iends many conno tations to as many individuals as antici pate its progression. So, too,when actual retirement takes place, past reflections become reality and in so doing a new way of life opens up. JOHN NESSNER joined the SherwinWilliams Company as Credit Manager in the Regional Office on September 1, 1945. In this position lie was assistant to both G. T. Thomas and Cl E. Rutledge, Manager Credits Jfe Accounting, having handled credits for Region. Automotive, Transportation, Chemical Coatings, PC&C and Container Division accounts. Over the years. John's record as Credit Manager was second to none. As Credit Manager, John eained the reputation which accompanies many credit men--that of being a "worrier": howrever, he had a dual personality and svhen he turned on that other self, he be came the life of the pa ty. He had an ever-ready dry-wit about him which Well, we tan see what brought on John's chuckle this time--Someone needs a spelling lesson. You can catch the surprise on his face as Mr. Drummond leads John into the spacious room filled with guests for the luncheon. Mr. Rutledge in the haclcground. 16 topped any comments or thoughts of those in his presence. His flair for dog gerel rhymes ameliorated many affairs, and brought chuckles of delight from sidelines. John was an extremely conscientious man, always wanting to give his best to his career, his home, his family, his friends and his religion, and that cir cumspection will continue in the years ahead, we are sure. It is rather difficult to keep from becoming too personal when writing about a personal friend; suffice it to say that John's retirement left a void (who is going to adjust my air conditioning all the time now?) February' 29 started for John when he walked into his office and found on his desk a beautiful wrist watch--a gift from his Accounts Receivable Department. A beautifully decorated cake, and coffee, were served in the morning and a lunch eon was held in the M & M Club with some twenty-five persons in attendance to honor John on his last clay. He re ceived a number of gifts from his friends ancl co-workers in the Region. Mae Nessrler, John's charming wife, attended the luncheon, and, as John said, gave him moral support as be closed another chapter and turned the pages to seek fulfillment through other outlets. The Album of Letters which Mr. Drummond presented contained me mentoes of respect which John earned as a Credit Man. May his retirement bring the same sense of fulfillment with many years of good health and happiness. Wally Klomhaus, who has worked with John so closely over the years, presented a gift certificate. Chuck Leamy, PC&C Division Manager, rep resenting possibly the largest share of John's good accounts over the years, made a presrma- tionof a beautiful sports shirt. On his "BIG DAY" em ployees of the branch had a cake, coffee and soft drink party for all friends who have been Branch customers during his 25-year tenure. LeRoy joined the Sherwin-Williams Company as stockkeeper in the Owens boro Branch on April 12, 1943 and on February 1, 1944 became Sales Clerk; on February I, 1947 he was classified as Combination Salesman, and on Septem ber 1 he was made City Salesman; Sep tember 1, 1949 he was assigned to the Brandi as Manager and he has con tinued as a successful Branch Manager. Formal recognition of LeRoy's mo mentous day was paid on April 24 at Gabe's Supper Club. Joining in the festivities were his wife, Clara, daughter Ann, his mother, Mrs. R. Bivins, and sister, Ruth. Mr. Drummond presented the 25-Year Long Service Certificate and watch to I.eRoy, and a lovely string ol pearls to Clara Bivins. With this warning, Phil Shidler, a North junior begins his assent into an entirely ditterent world --one of hying. Phil began his hobbyin February, and after eight hours in the air with his instructor seated beside him, he recently mastered his first solo. There are a number of requiiemerits during the course of instructions;-- once in the air with the insttuctor, Phil was required to simulate engine failure. "You glide into a com field until you're about 50 feet From the ground, then you back up," Phil explained. Another requirement is to stall when the plane continues to climb unitl the air speed is so low that it begins to falL He said. "Once the plane almost went into a spin--llial was close, too." Phil also works on model airplanes, which was one of the main reasons he became interested in flying. lie will be 17 in October and hopes to acquire a pilot's license when he has reached the minimum age requirement.
