From the Department of Commerce, it has been learnt that in 1976 the total consumption of asbestos within the United States was 726,000''short tons. Friction materials industry used 63,800 tons or 8.8% of the total. During that same year, Abex Corporation purchased 8,229 short tons for its domestic production.
