LOUISIANA 70764 BOA 667-4321 March 20, 1975 TO ALL LHC #2 EMPLOYEES For your information: As most of you already know, we have been striving over the past couple of years to lower the noise level in some of the high noise level areas of the plant. Experimentation has been going on with several types of noise reducing materials and devices. Over the past several months the sound shield insulation which includes a lead barrier has been installed on 2D-1 A, B, C and on 2D-13, as well as some of the equipment and piping on the suction side of 2K-71 A. This has produced a significant decrease in the noise generated by this equipment. Also the installation of burner mufflers on our cracking furnaces is aiding in reducing noise levels. This reduction of noise does not allow us to eliminate our hearing protection requirement because we are still above the maximum of 90 decibels. Hopefully, however, continued efforts in the future will enable us to isolate this requirement to a nuch smaller area of the block. Attached are some results of some before and after noise surveys which have been conducted. This will show you some of the progress we are making toward noise reduction. R. J.
