BUILDING ADHESIVES got top billing at the I960 Building Research Institute spring conference. At a brainstorming session, drywall contractors and gypsum manufacturers challenged adhesive producers to increase research efforts to aid the growing trend toward adhesive application of gypsum wall- board. As a first step, the adhesives companies hope to develop a uniform adhesives specification by this fall. Here, in an exclusive preview, is a step-by-step intro duction to the first of these new partition systems--the USG Semi-Solid Gypsum Drywall Partition. Developed to provide a space-saving, studless, non-load bearing drywall partition system primarily for the resi dential market, the new USG Semi-Solid Partition can be erected on the job without time-consuming bench work, and with little layout and cutting. The economical, struc turally rigid partition also eliminates permanent face nails and screws, thereby reducing finishing requirements. A minimum number of components makes erection of the Semi-Solid Partition quick and easy. Wooden floor and ceiling runners are first laid out and nailed at 16-in. in tervals. The initial face layer of Vs-in. Sheetrock gypsum wallboard is then fastened vertically to one side of the runners. Only three nails, one at each corner and center point, are used at top and bottom. Special 8-in. wide ribs of 1-in. gypsum coreboard are snapped on the job from new I"x24"x7'8" coreboard (scored both sides to three 8-in. widths) and laminated to the back of the face layer after it is erected. Application of the second face layer with vertical long edges centered over the core units completes erection and leaves the partition ready for conventional joint treatment and finishing. High on this list of "extra values" is a cove sys tem which gives ceilings the custom appearance that appeals to builders and home buyers alike. Combining low-cost materials with easy erection, the coves (shown above) are formed from a few simple parts Emerich makes in his garage workshop. Right angle braces cut from 1-in. scrap lumber are nailed along the ceiling-wall joint at 8-ft. inter vals to provide the cove base. A jigsaw is used to pre-cut an 8-in. radius circle in the 90 brace angle before nailing. Each brace's ceiling leg is 8 in. long and M in. thick on the end. The wall leg is 7 in. long and tapers to a sharp edge. After the braces are in place, notched doorstop is butted against the end of the ceiling leg and nailed. Strips of heavy art poster board, 8 ft. long by 14 in. wide, are then curved and nailed to the braces so that the top edge fits into the doorstop notch. Ceil ing and wall joints and the butt end joints are re inforced and concealed with the Perf-A-Tape sys tem to complete the job. Emerich is convinced that any applicator can be come adept at making this type of ceiling coves in a very short time. This was the question that faced Lamunyon Drywall Contractors, Inc. when the southern California building boom hit Buena Park. Proud of their three-year quality reputation, partners Harold Lamunyon and John Walters re fused to increase business at the risk of reducing workmanship. Lacking time to train new men to meet their high standards, the partners staked their future on a new method of continuous machine ap plication of tape and cement. Armed with a little ingenuity and a lot of know how, they mounted a 250-gallon container atop their pickup truck and drove to a nearby machine shop. The result is a mobile unit which enables two crews to tape flats and angles in two dozen houses a day-- more than twice their previous production. In addi tion to doubling volume the rig eliminates the need for stockpiling materials at the site and makes it easy to work in areas where fresh water is unavailable. Power for the rig is furnished by the truck motor which is left running while the men are working. Agitator blades in the tank are run off the motor as well as air compressors which force the cement through the supply hoses. PARTNERS Harold Lamunyon, left, and John Walters developed continuous machine taping and cement appli cation rig to meet mushrooming business opportunities. The flow of cement from the tank is controlled by a button on the taping tool which activates a solenoid. When keyed, the solenoid engages the clutch and starts the rotor-stator tube underneath the tank. Sufficient force is provided to supply cement through 200 feet of hose. This makes it easy to service two-story buildings as well as groundlevel dwellings. Since inaugurating the new equipment, Lamunyon Drywall has completed a 500-home tract for a single contractor in addition to completing homes and apartments for other builders. Results of this ex tensive usage indicate quality equal to previous workmanship and a savings in labor costs which more than offsets the original cost of the rig. Incoming contracts more than justify Lamunyon and Walters' belief that a quality reputation con tinues to be their most important sales tool. j W.
