This refers to your kind offer to secure Dr. R.A.KIehoe's comments on the following question. Ave desire to obtain an opinion relative to . the possibility of lead poisoning of individuals in a `neighborhood in which a soluble lead salt might be used to improve the combustion efficiency of domestic furnace oils in typical oil fired home heating units. The total amount of lead in the .final fuel oil mixture would vary between .0.012$ and 0.02b%. Treated fuel oil might be burned at the rate of approximately 300-gallons in from 30 to 60/days, resulting in a daily release of lead of between 12c and 2V grams. The concentration of lead in the atmosphere would of course vary depending upon the amount and direction of pre vailing winds, and-it would of course be possible that an appreciable build up of atmospheric lead might result in event a period -were encountered wherein there was little movement of air for a number of days. Although we appreciate that with so many in tangibles involved it may be difficult to arrive at specific conclusions, nevertheless the assumptions proposed would cover."what might be encountered under typical conditions. We are primarily interested to know whether or not the re sultant concentration of atmospheric lead in a neighborhood, where such lead treated fuel were used exclusively in home heating oil fired furnaces, might be sufficient to rule out consideration of such treated fuel for heating purposes.
