RE? ASBESTOS CARDING EQUIPMENT
Dear Mr. Wright:
With reference to previous correspondence on quality problems with carding machines, I see that you have received a reply from R. M. International and I hope the information is helpful.
We have had problems and find that some experimentation is necessary. Cur people have come up with the following comment:
"A problem arose when the supplier of card clothing reduced the length of wires from 1" to 3A" - to compensate for this change the back fancy rolls (B) was increased in diameter from 1" to 1 7/l6" (see print).
Approximately one and one-half years ago the asbestos lap supplier (Raybestos-Manhattan) began to supply the lap in single sliver, replacing the previous multi-sliver lap. The single sliver lap required changes to our carding equipment adjustments. These changes are noted in the print forwarded to Cable Makers of Australia.
The maintenance of carding equipment is critical and must be performed periodically. The vacuum exhaust system is a vital contributing factor to fabricate satisfactory wire; if vacuum lines are defective, excess asbestos fly may form on wire and create lumps.
Whirler die must be clean internally to minimize asbestos clinging to surface, which will gradually build up to a spontaneous delivery of absestos. Primary conductor should be run through a rag saturated with light mineral oil just prior to card - this will assist asbestos to cling and form around wire."

To Summarize:
1. Properly train operators. 2. Properly train mechanics (see print clearances) 3. Experiment with delivery gears on card equipment. 4. Treat primary conductor with oil. 5. Proper maintenance and adjustment. 6. Check all belt drives. 7. Wire line in proper alignment to card equipment. 8. Whirler die size (approx. .075" larger than O.D.) --
Approx. 4200 R.P.M. 9. Inspect vacuum exhaust system. 10. Experiment with different type lap. 11. Kct humid ambient will present operational problems --
store asbestos in wrapper - dry area.
.
In addition, it is possible that the 2000 grains might be too heavy for the smaller wires, for instance, on A.W.G. size 16 solid, we would use 250 lap.
With reference to card settings given to you by R. M. International they possibly could conflict with information we are submitting. The use of carders still contains certain skill elements and it is quite conceivable that different practices could produce equivalent results.
We sincerely hope that between the information given by R. M. International and contained herein, you will clear up your problems. If you are in need of more help please advise and we will see what we can do.
Very truly yours,
