I am so rry that it has not been p o ssib le to reply e a r lie r to your letter o f D e c e m b e r 2 9 . I w a s ou t o f tow n w hen it c a m e , h o w e v e r , and s in c e m y return I've been unable to get at m ore than the m o st urgent item s of the day's w ork and of corresp on d en ce.
I have co n sid ered the incident d escrib ed in your le tte r and the illn e s s of the custodian in that relation sh ip , and have ask ed one of m y a sso cia te s to co m m en t on the m a tter out o f h is e x te n siv e know ledge of the je c t. We th in k it q u ite u n lik e ly th at th e i l l n e s s had a n y r e la t io n ship tq th e u s e o f th e s p r a y . C e r ta in ly M eth o x y c h lo r i s r e g a r d e d a s one of the Least dan gerous, p oten tially, of the in se cticid a l m a ter ia ls, being even le s s to x ic than D D T. The oth er in g red ien ts o f the sp ra y have been u sed ex't e n s iv e ly and w ould not b e e x p e c te d to g iv e r i s e to h a r m . The Alieth r ins, for exam p le, have been u sed in such sp rays after approval by gov ern m en tal a u th o r itie s .
Of c o u r se , th ere are few su b stan ces that a re not capable of causing b iza rre a lle r g ic resp o n ses on the part of certa in highly su scep tib le p erso n s, but the exposure in th is instance seem s to have been very sligh t, and the p rob ab ilities a re again st this interp retation of the situation. I should think it m uch m ore lik ely that the u se of the spray was coincident with the onset of an upper resp ira to ry infection or viral d ise a se , and that th is coincidence gave the appearance of a cause and effect relationship.
D octor W iseley could, of co u rse, te s t the reaction of the custodian's sen sitiv ity tc the m aterial by b rief and cautious application of a sm all quantity o f the diluted m ateria l to the m ucous m em brane of h is throat, observin g the outcom e carefu lly. He m ay not con sid er this either n ecessa ry or w ise, but such te sts of "sensitivity" have been made by others at tim es, and have som etim es been helpful.
