The documents include: 1. A copy of the AIA/NA position paper on "Asbestos and Health," which examines the question of general public exposure in some detail. -- - 2. A copy of Dr. Hans Weill's presentation at the Federal EPA hearings in Los Angeles last February. His main topic is emissions from tailings dumps, but the general theme of the paper is that people living in the vicinity of chrysotile asbestos mines are in no danger from mine emissions. 3. A copy of the Report of the Advisory Committee on Asbestos Cancers of the International Agency for Research on Cancer, a division of the World Health Organization. I have indicated in red those sections of the report of special interest with regard to public exposures and the hazards of chrysotile mining operations. 4. A copy of the National Academy of Sciences booklet "Asbestos: The Need for and Feasibility of Air Pollution Controls." The theme of this booklet is that while asbestos emissions should be controlled, there is presently no reason to be concerned about the levels of asbestos in the ambient air. 5. A copy of the presentation made by Dr. J. C. McDonald of McGill University at the Federal EPA hearing held in New York City in January, 1972. Dr. McDonald, as you know, conducted extensive research among the chrysotile mining regions of Quebec. \v j Hr. Paul I. Weiner Page Two March 20, 1973 I'a sorry that circumstances will not permit me to app< personally at the hearing, but as you are well aware, i developments with regard to OSHA requires prompt action the Association to assure that the make-up etc. of the advisory committee will not be prejudicial to the indus vital interests in this area. An emergency meeting of AIA Executive Committee will probably be held early nex: on this subject, and I must of course be. prepared with i proposed industry line of attack by that time. If I can be of any further assistance with regard to the situation in Vermont, please let me know and I will do m to lend whatever aid I can within the time limitation im upon me by developments totally outside of my control.
