McAllister Iaperial Oil Limited 56 Church Street Toronto, Ontario, Canada Dear Mr. McAllister* In reference to our telephone conversation, re garding our regulations for placing lead earning signs on pumps dispensing gasoline treated with tetraethyl lead, we are enclosing copy of a letter written today on the same subject to Service Station Equipment Company, Ltd., which I believe answers most of your questions. Our contract under Section B. Health Regulations, Paragraph (b) reads as follows* "The handling and mixing of said compound with gasoline and the distribution and sale of the treated gaso line shall be carried out in accordance with the rules and regulations now in existence or which may be hereafter issued from time to time by ETHIL and any government agency having jurisdiction in the premises." This paragraph specifies that the oil company, which is a party to it, will abide by all rules and regulations Issued by Ethyl Corporation from time to time and I am attach ing a copy of our Rules and Regulations for distribution of gasoline containing tetraethyl lead which covers the display on each pump of the lead warning signs. RULES AND REGULATIONS For Distribution of Gasoline Containing Tetraethyl Lead Each filling station' shall have promi nently displayed on each pnmp from which gasoline containing tetraethyl lead is dis pensed, either of the following two notices: CONTAINS LEAD (1) (TETRAETHYL) AND IS TO BE USED AS MOTOR FUEL ONLY, NOT FOR CLEANING OR ANY OTHER USE. AVOID SPILLING. Containers of gasoline treated with tet raethyl lead shall be labeled (with a sticker or decalcomania) with either of the follow ing two notices: CONTAINS LEAD (1) (TETRAETHYL) AND IS TO BE USED AS MOTOR FUEL ONLY, NOT FOR CLEANING OR ANY OTHER USE. AVOID SPILLING. (2) FOR USE AS A MOTOR FUEL ONLY CONTAINS LEAD (TETRAETHYL) (2) FOR USE AS A MOTOR FUEL ONLY CONTAINS LEAD (TETRAETHYL) These signs shall be of metal or porce lain enamel and placed between the limits of four and five feet above the ground level on the face of each side of the pump at which delivery is made. GASOLINE CONTAINING TETRAETHYL LEAD IS INTENDED AND SOLD ONLY AS A MOTOR FUEL AND FOR NO OTHER PURPOSE. There is danger involved in handling all motor fuels, whether they contain tetraethyl lead or not. When breathed as a vapor in sufficient quantity, any kind of gasoline may produce serious results, and when allowed to remain in contact with the skin, it frequently produces irritation and blistering.
