THE COVER. The age-old maxim that oil and water don't mix takes on a new meaning when used by petroleum producers. When a producing well, such as this pumper outlined against a dusky California sky, yields water along with oil (and most of them do), carbonate scale can clog critical passageways, restrict ing the flow of fluid. To keep these downhole perforations free from plugging, oilmen are turning to new dry-acid descaling prod ucts based on DuPont sulfamic acid. For details, see page 12.

Du Pom's Fabrics and Finishes Dept, began to research the matter. F&F soon es tablished a list of properties for the ideal adhesive for "perfect binding," i,e,, bind ing which bonds 'each page individually, attaches the cover, holds the whole book together without stitching or side staples and withstands the severe flexing that occurs when the book is bent buck on itself. Work ing with these ideals as their touchstone, laboratories introduced via pilot plant a tan-colored, elastic solid based on 'a synthetie resin. When heuted to 250tp350 "F,,. it. softened and became n viscous liquid. cialized talents blending ideas from the fields of dyes, graphic arts, printing, selling, advertising and promotion.
Organized six years ago by the Du Pont Dyes and Chemicals Division, the Council set out to dramatize the power of color.
