Have several trips scheduled for WDC in the next couple months. One is to talk about bio politics with the refuge folks at NCTC August 23. n Another trip in late September to sit down with the Secretary and Angelo Tsakopoulos. May come back a few other trips also, but so far those two are the ones that have firmed up. I had a couple of thoughts after we visited, about what worked when I was the Regional Director for Region 8. With 33 years in the FWS and now 9 years out consulting I have some thoughts. In the past 8 years several things have set back the conservation of endangered species. One is the Service no longer seems to issue not likely to take letters that saved business interest millions of dollars, in up front planning on projects that have no on ESA species or their habitat. Seems like millions of dollars wasted in the premitting process, not on wildlife conservation. The second area that has really fallen back is what can be done for species like sage grouse or lesser prairied chickens for example. This is pre-listing conservation efforts that work really well with business interest and the state wildlife agencies. Another area of improvement is with the HCPs and how they might work with private landonwers that have a wildlife and business interest. Put some notes together that are attached and perhaps a little more detail. Thank you for taking on this new demanding job.. .your efforts to solve issues and conserve wildlife is really appreciated.
