CARTER PITTSBURGH OFFICE *1 ' TO / RE: NIOSH TRAINING COURSES ----- SAMPLING AND EVALUATING AIRBORNE ASBESTOS DUST We recently became aware that the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has scheduled in 1973 a number of additional presentations of their training course on the sampling and evaluating airborne asbestos dust such as the one which was presented at Cincinnati, October 31 - November 2, 1972. A copy of the significant pages of the brochure for this October 31 - November 2, 1972 course is attached for your examination. As you may know, some of our operating locations have encountered difficulties in making asbestos fiber count determinations as required under the provisions of the worker exposure standard for asbestos issued by OSHA in June, 1972. Since we have significant asbestos fiber exposures at a number of our operating locations, it is im portant that each affected location be\able to make accurate asbestos counts to assure complijance with the very restrictive OSHA standard. We have just learned from NIOSH that there will be two regional sessions of this same training course conducted in April of this year on April 10, 11 & 12 in Salt Lake City, and April 16, 17 & 18 at a location in Missouri not yet established (probably in Warrensburg in central Missouri). These two offerings of the training course are aimed primarily to serve the general areas in which they are being held, with the Salt Lake City session being related to OSHA regions 8, 9 and 10 and that in Missouri to OSHA region 6. However, these geographical boundries will probably not be'rigidly held to for attendees for the two sessions. There are still a small number of vacancies in each of the two sessions. In addition to these two regional meetings, there is also one scheduled at the NIOSH facility in Cincinnati, Ohio on May 15, 16 and 17 which presently is full and has a small waiting list. However, NIOSH has indicated that there is at least a possibility of additional registrants being admitted in the event of cancellations. Even if a late applicant is denied entry, he will be notified when the next class will be held. If you and your management decide it is to your advantage to send one of your people to either of these regional meetings, we would recommend that you fill out very promptly the registration form portion of the attached copy of the NIOSH brochure, marking out the original 1972 course .date and location, and typing in the date and location of the training course in which you are interested (using merely "Missouri" as the location of that conference). For the Salt Lake City and Missouri courses, these should be mailed promptly to Mr. James S. All as pects of sampling and evaluation will be discussed. This includes equipment discussions, calibration procedures, sampling time, counting of fibers, time-weighted averages, and other re lated topics. Subject matter will be covered in such a manner that people who are new to the field should have no problem. However-, a general knowl edge of physics and/or chemistry will be helpful.
