Dear Walt:
The air filters and ins.ulation sample have been analyzed for asbestos. The only crystalline material noted in the insulation sample labelled "650 Park Ave. E Orange Wall Surface Air Cond Room" was some form of an amphibole. When examined by polarized light microscopy and dispersion staining many nonbirefingent fibers (probably fibrous glass) as well an many asbestiform fibers were noted. These asbestiform fibers had all the optical characteristics of amosite - one of the amphibole asbestoses. Based on the presence of an amphibole mineral and the asbestiform fibers this sample contains asbestos.
All air filters were analyzed by counting all fibers greater than 5 pm long seen by phase contrast optical microscopy at 400X. These are the methods recommended by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). Based on your sampling data and the microscopy counts the results were:
