Company Johns-Manville Sales Corp. The Marine Agencies Session was called to order at 9:15 AM with Walter Sinclair as Acting Chairman and R, , Harmon as Acting Secretary (this session only). The entire morning and afternoon sessions were spent in the review of the Bureau of Ships (herein after referred to as BuShips) Technical Manual, Chapter 39, Section I, and the revision of draft proposals prepared by Mr* Munkres, There were approximately 18 requests for further NIMA assistance and/or action by individuals. These are. underlined to assist in ready reference. Mr. Munkres stated, at the offset and reviewed several times during the discussion, that the intended use of this Technical Manual was for use by shipboard personnel. It is not a specification. It is educational but does not differentiate between the various methods lists as to preference or to most recent application tendencies. It is a historical listing of permissable techniques. It was pointed out that Mil-Standards would not likely be kept aboard ships. Early in the discussion it was noted that certain redundancies occurred in the written manuscript but they should remain with the hope that they would make the Manual clearer to the users aboard ship. ( 2 It was further noted that this Manual follows the Mil-Standards and that many of the revisions were made so that the Manual would be up-dated and consistent with Mil-Standard-769A, The existing BuSHips Technical Manual, Chapter 39 Thermal Insulation, Section 1 Machinery and Piping Insulation dated 15 April 1959 and the Pro posed Revision of the same prepared by Mr* Mtmkres were available to each attendee* The following are notations of agreement for changes in these two versions of this Manual* There are several indications where additional information will be sought and submitted to BuShips. Thus, the revision and/or the present Chapter 39 stand except'where noted below: 39rl To meet troubles with anti-sweat and vapor barriers existing Item 4 was deleted and a new Item 4 and 5 were added. In the revised Item 4 "liquid or gas" was inserted before "fuilds". 39-U ( 2 (a) - Mil--P--2781 corrected to Mil-I-2781 molded cork pipe covering Mil-P-876 deleted because it is no longer available domestically* 2 (c) - Also add Mil-I-23128, Insulation Blanket, Thermal Refractory, Fiber Flexible* 3' - Mil-P-2781 corrected to Mil-I-2781, 4 - Mil-P-2781 corrected to Mil-I-2781. 5 - Mil-P-2781 corrected to Mil-I-2781* 6. - Mil-P-2781 corrected.to Mil-I-2781* 7 - Mil-P-2781 corrected to Mil-I-2781* 8 - Mil-P-2781 corrected to Mil-I-2781 16 (new) - In next last line make read "in rolls 50 and 75 feet"* 17 (new) - Mil-I-15475 believed to cover only 3 lbs/cubic foot density, Thus fourth sentence corrected to "The batts are furnished in 3 pounds per cubic foot density*" BuShips will double check. ( 3 - Entire paragraph to be rewritten by BuShips to up-date to current issue of SS-C-466 where in grades have been changed. Also sug gested BuShips determine whether both AA and AAA grades of SS-C466 are required. Grade AA believed adequate and less expensive. 4 - Knitted glass tapes to be included by BuShips either by class or description. 6 - BuShips to determine whether this item is needed since it is heavier and more expensive than other methods,-- Indications were that it will eventually be removed from Mil-Std. -769. 7 - At start delete "asbestos" and change to "finishing and insulation cemtns, etc. " 8 - Change Specification 47S29 to latest Federal Specification (believed to be QQ-S-775), 39-13 1 - Mr. V/ild to-report to Mr. Munkres on use of sodium silicate solution O-S-605, Latter should perhaps be in Mil-Std-769. 39-14 1 - Polyvinyl chloride emulsion-coating should be added to BuShips and steps taken to get it into Mil-C-19565. Mr. Wild to report with information and properties. Messrs. Munkres and/or Seith to check with BuShips coatings group. 39-21 1 - Insert new statement "All surfaces shall be prepared in accordance with Chapter 19 prior to applying insulation. " Renumber following paragraphs. 2 (new) - JAN-P.-702 corrected to Mil-P-17970. Also in revision delete words following "appearance" and add "in accordance with Chapter 19." Table I - Combines-Table 1-8 from old Chapter 39 into one new table. After Mil-I-2781 in title add (See para, 39-11). Also subnote 1 should refer to "thickness" not "class." NIMA requested to inve stigate Table 1 to upgrade-to l-200oF. Six numbers required and this could then go into Mil-Std-769. 4 39-2.1 (cor.t.) Table II - Add `'nominal" to "thickness" Table III - Add "nominal" to "thickness Table IV - Add "nominal" to "thickness". Also subnote 1 should refer to thickness in Table rather than in-title, Messrs. Iviunkres and Kincaid will determine where Mil-I-23128 fits into Tables IV -- and V, Table V - Add `kiominal" to "thickness". Also add thicknesses to 1051- 1200F service range*- NiMA will recommend for BuShips consideration. Table VI - Add to title (Exclusive of Vapor Barrier), Also NIMA and BuShips to check whether thickness given in Table VI and VII with and without air conditioning are reasonable. Table VH - Add "nominal" to "thickness", BuShips to check Design Section and remove if there are no applications for Table VII, Table VIII - Correct Mil-I-551 to HH-I-551, C 39-32 Add title "Cloth and Tape Lagging" 2 - Combine first two sentences into one to read "Asbestos cloth is fitted on tight and smooth and then cemented on," 3 - BuShips to add item on "Application of Metal Lagging," 39-33 8c 34 NIMA requested to re-word present section which was felt to be meaning less, Asbestos felt would not meet 1200F, A removable type of insula tion was indicated as being desirable*. 39-38 3 - Delete word "asbestos" so as to read in first sentence "Molded pipe covering ,, *, etc* " Item was felt to be informative but preferable methods at lower costs follow* Therefore this item may be deleted, in future* 6 - Change word "hanger" at end of third line of revision to "clamp". Suggestion made to BuShips that a rosin sized pape-r at one tenth the cost could replace the vapor barrier paper Mil-F-15006 since 5 39-38 6 (cont,) the latter was used for smoothness rather than vapor barrier, Mr, Wild will check on sources of suitable papers to make certain that it would not be a one source item, 39-39 4 - Delete first sentence starting with "Pipes,..." 39-53 Note previous reference to SS-C-466 as to whether grade AA or AAA are required, 39-54 Needs a title to be consistent 39-55 Needs a title to be consistent 39-59 1 (a) - Should read ",,,,in accordance with 39-39," 39-60 2- "Calcium silicate , Mil-I-2781, Class b, c or dn to be re-worded by BuShips, 2 (f) - In. second sentence after mineral wool add "or fibrous glass, " 2 (a) - An investigation by BuShips was suggested of Mil-B-19564 bedding compound between 400F and 50Q^F, BuShips to check with deck equipment group. The question is whether Navy has any super heated steam machinery on deck, 39-72 4- Add Mil-I-23128 to present revised description. ( 6 Time did not permit other than a brief informal discussion of the Basic Specification - Maritime Section 12 {Insulation of Ducts 8< Facings) at this meeting.
