Qur original plant was built by the Thompson--Apex Company in 1963, and purchased by Conoco a year later. Today, our plant produces over 600 million pounds of products each year, a 12-fold increase since our beginning. We became part of the Vista family in 1984, when Vista Chemical Company was created from the assets of Conoco Chemicals, following Conoco''s merger with DuPont. Today, Vista operates nine plants in seven states, and is headquartered in Houston, Texas. " Copy: THE PROCESS Our process Monomer, or sphere . begins with incoming MCM, which is stored railcar shipments of Minyl Chloride in our 4--mi11 ion pound capacity The MCM is mixed with water and other ingredients and reacted to form PMC resin. The wet PMC slurry is pumped into blend tanks, then moved to the dryers. Now a dry white powder, the PMC is stored in si 1 os from which it is loaded into railcars and trucks -for shipment to our customers. Our Compounding! Copy: QUR CONCERN FOR THE ENMIRQNMENT Like all chemical companies, we operate under various complex regulations and guidelines established by federal, state and local governments. We invest considerable time and money to comply with these regulations, and with new regulations as they come out. --PMC POWDER A small amount of dust gets through our filtration system, and periodically shows up as a fine white powder on cars in the This powder is sometimes a nuisance. It is primarily PMC resin, which is inert and non-toxic, and which will not hurt you or damage the paint on cars. We have taken a number of major steps to reduce the powder problem, and these efforts will continue. The State Bureau of Pollution Control has established a limit for particulate emissions from our plant of 300 pounds per hour. Our actual particulate emissions are about 35 pounds per hour, less than 12% of the permitted amount, and we are working to reduce this further . Copy MCM producing PMC resin. While PMC, our end-product, is quite inert and non-toxic, there is concern about cancer and other health e-f-fects related to MCM exposure. These problems have been associated with levels o-f exposure grea11 y higher than any in our plant today. And we have never had a case o-f serious health problems related to MCM exposure at our Aberdeen -faci 1 i ty. Current GSHA standards limit occupational exposure to a maximum average o-f 1 part per milli on -for any e i gh t hour peri od, or a maximum average o-f 5 ppm -for any 15 minute period, and we are normally well below these levels. We have a system o-f sensitive monitoring devices to detect the presence and concentration o-f MCM in the plant, and we also monitor employees individually. In 1987, environmental standards permitted 214,000 pounds per year o-f MCM emissions -from our plant. Our actual emissions wer e^ 120,000 pounds. We can't tolerate any leaks, so there's usually three or -four of us working on valves, to head off serious problems before they develop. Sometimes we stay late, it fixing something quickly is important to keep the plant running smoothly and safely." Cop y: OUR CONCERN FOR THE ENVIRONMENT --SOLID WASTE Like any home or business, we also generate a certain amount of trash. In our case, it consists of paper, cardboard, plastic, wood, PMC resin and compounds. Most of this is non-hazardous waste, which we send to the Monroe County landfill, and it amounts to about 2,500 tons a year. A much smaller amount of hazardous waste is generated at the plant, the bulk of which is waste oil. About 15 truckloads, of 5,000 gallons each, are shipped each year to a company which burns it as fuel for their process, under environmentally safe conditions. About four times a year, sixty 55-gallon drums of various materials are shipped to Erne 11e, Alabama, for disposal in a secure landfill operated by Chemical Waste Management Company. Only 10% of this waste is actually classified as hazardous. The rest is sent to the secure landfill as an added precaution. In our mode of continuous improvement, we are striving to further reduce or eliminate these solid wastes, or find markets so the material may be used rather than requiring disposal. We get the water we use in the plant from on--site wells- and from the City of Aberdeen. We discharge waste water into James Creek, and our state of the art treatmen t system protects the fish, p1 ants and wildlife that depend on that aquatic environment. A series of large, aerated ponds reduce organic materials in the water to 307. of the allowable limit, before it enters James Creek. The water we discharge actually has a higher oxygen content than the water already in James Creek.
