Some drums have an integrated hub and some are hubless. If the shoes and drums are scored, it may be necessary to back off the self-adjuster in order to remove the drum. If the drum is rusted and difficult to remove from the axle flange, hammer lightly around the outside edge of the drum. Do not hammer on the inner lip of the drum or it may crack. Remove the brake return springs using a brake spring tool. Always organize your parts logically, so they can be installed in the correct location. Note the color and location of the primary and secondary return springs. Use a hold down spring tool to remove the hold down spring caps from the hold down pins.
