Monsanto TexasFROM 1LOCATION) city, Texas PATE August 20, 1965 SUBJECT REFERENCE Complaint No. 65-14-VCM-3 TO B. J. Darby buju. ( C C J. W. Kongable J. L. Price T. E. Shirley A. H. Conrad The purpose of this memo is to summarize the results obtained on tank car MCPX 14948. This car was returned by Carbide as off-spec, primarily on color. The tank car was sampled after returning and the following changes in components observed: Component Cone. When Shipped Cone. After Return MeCl MVA CB HC1 Fe AcH HB1 Color 30.12 ppm 1.04 4 0.1 <0.1 0.1 1 20 C &C 23.14 ppm Tr 6 2.0-2.5 0.9 9 (pink) 543 Light Brown i color of the retain sample was all right when rechecked. Approximately 1.5 liters of sample was weathered off and the residue submitted to the analytical group. Infra-red analysis showed the presence of a carbon-chlorine compound, alcoholic hydroxide, carbonyl (probably ketonic) and ether. Pyrolysis and MS analysis gave VCM, CO2, propylene and some benzene. The indications are that the residue contains hydrolyzed PVC from low molecular weight polymer. At least, this is not inconsistent with the observations. More work is planned in this area when more sample is available. Chromatographic analysis of the residue did not show any results at all. 2j t IN- 10 REV 6*64 H. S. Leach CBV 1111290 RSV0032455
