BY-PRODUCT ELECTRIC POWER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF FLORIDA
I icq risics of the Elliott turbine-generator. Abort, an over-all lieu: fea turing the generator, and below, a nVic of the governor end \f the turbine.
\T the University of Florid, Gainesville, this Elliott turf
generator unit provides by-pro, electric power from their ste heating load, and it also is used instruction purposes by their scl of engineering.
In 1949 when making plans future steam-generating facilities. University decided to provide their estimated needs of the.next years. Proceeding with this plan tl replaced three small old boilers w two new 65,000-lb-per-hr, 250-p oil-fired boilers and installed Elliott back-pressure turbine-g< erator with a single extraction po at 126-psig to supply steam to t university laundry. It has both bat pressure and speed governing so th it can be used as either a variableconstant-Ioad machine. The bac pressure control is set to mainta 62-psig steam pressure in the camp heating lines. If the exhaust pressu falls belovv 60 psig, due to the inabi ity of the turbine to pass more stear. an air-pilot-operated reducing static takes over and maintains the pre sure in the system by bypassing steal from the main header around th turbine.
An additional function of th turbine-generator is as an emergenc power source (along with thre diesel generators) in case of pout: failure due to hurricane or any othe reason. With the campus elcctrica system completely underground tht university can always maintain it: electrical service.
